FAQ: Osteoporosis
Are there differences between the way MDs treat Osteoporosis and
the way OM treats Osteoporosis? And, if so what are they:

Yes! What we OM practitioners call Allopathic medicine (medicine which
uses drugs or surgery) looks at osteoporosis as primarily simply a matter of
hormone deficiency due to aging (menopause and post-menopausal
syndrome) or some extreme disease process. It ignores entirely the dietary
and nutritional aspects and does not even begin to recognize the function of
the kidneys and their energetic and organic functions in bone loss and other
symptoms of menopause and post-menopausal status. Yet hormone
replacement therapy has been now largely discredited for any purpose. The
side effects of such medications are now recognized as being worse than the
ascribed benefits. These drugs are very hard on the body.

Well, if it is more complicated than the way Allopathic medicine sees it, how
does Traditional Chinese Medicine or Oriental medicine view it?

There are three main patterns of symptoms that one may find with
Osteoporosis. And finally there is a type that combines some of the symptoms
of all three.

1. First Possible Symptom Pattern:

There will be softening of the bones, with the possibility of brittleness and
easy bone fractures (osteoporosis). There may be weakness of the knees and
legs, poor memory, loose teeth, falling hair or premature graying of the hair,
decline in sexual performance and libido and soreness and weakness of the
back.
While the root problem involved with Osteoporosis is always a deficiency it is
often accompanied by some of the following pattern symptoms:

2. Second Possible Symptom Pattern:

A patient may have some of the following signs and symptoms: Dizziness,
tinnitus (usually low pitched), vertigo, night sweats, dry mouth, feeling of heat
in the palms, soles of the feet, and/or chest, flushed cheeks or face, feeling of
heat in the afternoon, dry throat or recurrent sore throat, thirst, sore back,
aches in bones, dry stools or constipation, dark scanty urine, heightened libido.
The tongue may be red with no coating on it and be cracked on the surface.

3. If Symptoms of the 2. symptom pattern are not present, one may
experience some of the following symptoms:

Some of the following signs and symptoms may be present in addition to the
signs and symptoms of Osteoporosis. Any or all of the following may be
present: Low back feels cold, feeling chilled, aversion to cold, cold limbs, cold
hands and feet, pale complexion, frequent abundant clear urine, frequent
urination at night, lassitude, apathy, low libido, urinary dribbling or
incontinence. The tongue may appear pale, swollen, with a thin white coat.

4. You may have signs and symptoms of off all three of the above
problems:

This is essentially a combination of some of the signs and symptoms of all three
of the above patterns.

How Do You Treat Osteoporosis Symptoms?

First, I suggest that you follow the recommendations I have detailed in FAQs
Acid/Alkaline Balance, on this website, especially those concerning the
importance of calcium supplementation.

Secondly, If you have any of the above symptoms, I recommend that you
schedule an appointment so that I can do a complete evaluation.

The main treatment plan involves taking herbs that will help your body restore
bone mass and balance out the imbalances causing your other symptoms. I
recommend that you take the herbs until a bone density test shows that you
have significantly reversed your osteoporosis.

Please call for your appointment right away. Don't make the mistake of
ignoring this potentially devastating dysfunction of the body by rationalizing
that it is a normal part of aging or that there are no effective treatments for it.
That is just not true.
